Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 3, 2026

Last updated: August 3, 2026

Previous version: July 22, 2026

What changed in this update: Expanded to cover data subject rights in full, added an appeals process, disclosed that we do not use personal information to train AI systems, named Google Fonts as a third party, and clarified retention periods.

Preserved ("Preserved," "we," "us," "our") publishes this newsletter and is the controller of the information described below.

This policy explains what we collect, why, who touches it, and what you can ask us to do about it. We ask you for one thing, so it's shorter than most.

1. What we collect

Your email address. You give it to us when you subscribe. We don't ask for your name, your location, your phone number, or anything else.

Your subscription record. We keep a record of your signup — the address you entered and when you entered it. This is how we show that you asked to receive the newsletter. We don't require you to confirm by email; submitting the form subscribes you.

Standard server log data. Our website is hosted by Netlify, which automatically records technical information including IP address, browser type, and the date and time of each request. This is a normal function of web hosting and is used to keep the site available and secure. We do not use it to build a profile of you or to identify you.

Email delivery and engagement data. Our email provider, Beehiiv, records whether an email was delivered, opened, or clicked, and whether it bounced or was marked as spam. We use this to know whether the newsletter is reaching people and to keep our list healthy.

In the disclosure categories used by California and several other states, this amounts to identifiers (email address, IP address) and internet or electronic network activity (email engagement, server logs). We collect nothing else.

Sources. All of it comes either directly from you, or automatically from your device when you visit our site or open our email. We do not buy lists, scrape addresses, enrich or append data from brokers, or receive subscriber information from third parties.

Sensitive personal information. We do not collect it. We do not ask for or process racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, health data, precise geolocation, biometric data, union membership, sexual orientation, immigration status, government identifiers, or financial account information.

Cookies. Our website sets no cookies and runs no advertising or analytics trackers.

Fonts. The handwritten typeface on our pages is served by Google Fonts. When a page loads, your browser requests that font file from Google, which means Google receives your IP address at that moment. We receive nothing from this and do not use it. Google's practices are described in their privacy policy, linked in Section 4.

If this ever changes. If we begin collecting anything additional — a first name on the signup form, for instance — we will update this policy before we start, and note it in the changelog above.

2. Why we collect it

To send you emails from Preserved. That is the purpose.

Secondary to that, we use the technical data above to keep the website running, keep our email deliverable, and comply with anti-spam law.

If you're somewhere that requires a stated legal basis for processing:

3. What we don't do

We want these stated plainly rather than buried:

Because we don't sell or share personal information, there is no opt-out to submit. We nonetheless honor recognized universal opt-out signals, including Global Privacy Control, where they apply.

4. Who we share it with

We use a small number of service providers to run the publication. We instruct them to use your information only to provide their service to us. Each operates under its own privacy terms, linked below:

Provider What they do What they receive Their policy
Beehiiv Stores our subscriber list and delivers our emails Email address, engagement data beehiiv.com/privacy
Netlify Hosts our website Server log data, including IP address netlify.com/privacy
Google Fonts Serves the handwritten typeface used on our pages IP address, at the moment the font loads policies.google.com/privacy

We may also disclose information:

We do not disclose personal information to any other third parties.

5. How long we keep it

We keep your email address for as long as you remain subscribed. If you unsubscribe or ask us to delete your information, we remove it from our active list promptly. Copies may persist for a short period in our providers' routine backups before being overwritten.

One exception: we retain a minimal suppression record — your email address and the fact that you opted out — indefinitely, so that we don't email you again by mistake. This is required to honor your opt-out and is the only reason we keep it.

Server log data is retained by our host on a rolling short-term basis for security purposes.

We may retain information longer than described above if there is an open complaint from you, or if we reasonably believe there is a prospect of legal proceedings involving it. We will hold only what is necessary for that purpose, and delete it once resolved.

6. Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights. We honor all of them for everyone, regardless of where you live.

7. How to exercise your rights

Unsubscribe: every email has a one-click unsubscribe link at the bottom. No questions, no confirmation flow.

Any other request: email us at the address in Section 12 and say what you want. That's the whole process.

Verification. Because email address is the only identifier we hold, we verify a request by confirming you control the address in question. We will not ask you for additional personal information in order to verify you.

Timing. We respond within one month. If a request is complex or you've made several, we may extend by up to 45 additional days and will tell you why within that first month.

Authorized agents. You may use an authorized agent to submit a request. We may ask for proof of their authority and, separately, confirmation from you.

Cost. Free, unless a request is excessive or repetitive, in which case we'll tell you before doing anything.

8. Appeals

If we deny a request, we will tell you why in writing and explain how to appeal.

To appeal, reply to our decision or email us with "Appeal" in the subject line. We will review the decision and respond in writing within 45 days with our conclusion and reasoning. If we deny your appeal, we will provide a method for you to contact your state attorney general to submit a complaint.

9. Children

Preserved is intended for adults and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13, or under 16 where local law sets that threshold. If you believe a child has subscribed, email us and we will delete the address promptly and without requiring further information.

10. Where your information goes

We are based in the United States, and your information is stored and processed here by us and by the providers listed in Section 4. If you subscribe from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the US, which may have different data protection laws than your country. Where a transfer safeguard is required, we rely on the mechanisms our providers have put in place, described in their privacy policies linked in Section 4.

11. Security

We hold a very small amount of information, which is the most reliable protection available — there is little to lose. Our providers maintain their own administrative and technical safeguards, including encryption in transit. Access to our subscriber list is limited to us.

No method of transmission or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach occurs that affects your information, we will notify you and any required regulator as the law requires.
